Somerset West Rugby Football Board

Established 1937

The Somerset West Rugby Football Board has a legacy as rich as the soil it stands on. Founded in 1937, this proud institution was born in the heart of Somerset West, a town known for its dynamite and explosives industry located on De Beers Road. From these humble beginnings, the Union served as a platform for extraordinary rugby talent, drawing players from all corners of the region.

Originally established by Christian Paulse, John Hendricks, CR Rhoda, and FJ Darius, the Somerset West & District Rugby Football Union brought together local clubs under one vision — to build a powerful union that could stand toe-to-toe with the giants of South African rugby. CR Rhoda served as the first secretary, and John Rose of Universal RFC was the inaugural chairperson.

Over the decades, the Union represented clubs like Hotspurs, Thistle, Violets, Pioneers, Shamrocks, Universals, and later expanded to include All Saints, Aurora, St George’s, Marines, Macassar, SACC (Ex-Scholars), St Matthew’s, Rosebuds, Vineyards, and Glen Lily.

Despite challenges, the Union held firm in its mission. From inter-union clashes with Southern Unions to hosting fierce local derbies, Somerset West was not just a rugby region — it was a movement.

Notable players and legends from this district include:

  • Victor and Ricky Petersen

  • Suleiman Abels

  • Harry Abrahams

  • Osman Davids

  • Robert Fairbairn

  • Clive de Waal (top referee)

  • Charles Klink

  • Fred Rassol

  • Ronnie Simons

  • Gabriel Noble

  • Claude and Johnny Gordon

  • and many more

These players not only led on the field but inspired generations off it — building a culture of resilience, unity, and excellence.

The Somerset Board played a critical role in the unification process that eventually led to the formation of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU), despite stiff resistance and difficult transitions. Clubs that stood united during this time included St George’s (1941), All Saints, Strand United, Strand Pioneers, and Macassar.

From training in the dark with limited resources to producing nationally recognised players and coaches, Somerset West Rugby’s journey is a testament to community power, history, and perseverance.
