Exactly why the Club called itself Young Stars cannot be established. Popular opinion has it that the Club is named after the Bright Stars in the evening Cape skies. Another view is that the Club takes its name from an early meeting place called the “Star Bioscope”.
Surprisingly, the inspiration to form Young Stars came from the All Blacks Tour to South Africa in 1928.Legend has it that the Clubs founding fathers then simply the rugby-playing “boys on the block” of course were so impressed with the All Blacks performance at the Newlands Test that they decided to create their own fully-fledged Club.
The first meeting of this Club was held in 1928 at 93 Church Street, Bo-Kaap. In a fitting recognition of the “unwitting” role of the New Zealand tourists that year, the “Fern” has been designed into the Young Stars logo.
Bo Kaap was home to many talented, skillfull people. At the time, the youth used to assemble at the street corner to smear bonds of friendship. One such group of young lads used to assemble at Waja shop on the corner of Church and Rose Street, every evening they socialised and played games.
In those days the Club had a strict jacket and tie dress code which included the wearing of fezzes at all formal meetings. Due to its strict admission criteria, gaining membership was extremely difficult but in this fashion, strict discipline could be achieved and was maintained.Doubtless, it was partly for this reason that the Club gained a reputation for its strong discipline, both on and off the field. This strict code of conduct was even acknowledged at SARU-level.
