Achievements

The club is built on a proud rugby heritage and has nurtured a legacy of players who have risen through its ranks to achieve national and international recognition. Among these standout names are Jonathan Francke (Griquas), Uzair Cassiem (Springboks), Adiel Davids (Pumas), and Jalielodien ‘Kalilie’ Arnold (Somerset Rugby Board and SARU), all of whom have brought prestige to the club and inspiration to their communities.

Background

Strand United RFC (SURFC) was formed in 1978 after the three clubs, Marines RFC, Aurora RFC and Methodist Ex-Scholars amalgamated to form one strong club. The club played under the flag of the then non-racial rugby union, South African Rugby Union (SARU). SARU consisted of different affiliates of which the Somerset Rugby Board was one. The SRB consisted of the black clubs in Strand, Somerset West, Macassar and Sir Lowry’s Pass.

A combined team would then be chosen to represent the SRB all over the Western Cape and Eastern Cape. SURFC always had a strong presence in the SRB team.

After the dawn of democracy in the early nineties, the different unions and clubs were integrated into the Western Province Rugby Football Union. SURFC competed in different leagues in the WPRFU club competition over the years having achieved numerous successes in this regard.

SURFC is a community-based rugby club rooted in the heart of Strand. We draw talent from across the region across the boundaries of race, religion, culture and economic status highlighting our diversity though we are based in one of the most disadvantaged and economically marginalized areas. As a community club we face many challenges, but SURFC has a proud history and has delivered many great players since its formation.

One of our main objectives is to promote the spirit of rugby within our community, which recognizes and rewards effort as much as achievement and encourages enjoyment, teamwork and respect.
