Rangers Rugby Football Club was o9icially established in 1959, following two years of
participation in a social Sunday rugby league that began in 1957. The club's first
meeting was held at the home of Imam Abubakr Simon in Clifton Street, District Six,
while council meetings took place at the residence of Boeta Noor "Naughty" Masoet.
Training sessions were held on the open fields alongside Trafalgar High School.
Success came early when, in 1960, Rangers RFC won the Western Province Rugby
Union (WPRU) League Championship, announcing itself as one of the province's
emerging rugby clubs.
Like many organisations rooted in District Six, Rangers RFC was deeply a9ected by the
forced removals during apartheid. In 1974, the club relocated to Surrey Estate, where
meetings were held at the Duinefontein Madrassah Hall. Despite this upheaval, the
club remained united and continued to grow.
In 1976, Rangers merged with Caledonian Roses to form Caledonian Rangers RFC,
before resuming as Rangers RFC in 1981. The club also established Diamant Street
Sports Field as its home ground, where generations of players have represented the
club with pride.
The early 1980s became one of the most successful periods in Rangers RFC's history. In
1983 and 1984, the club won the Grand Challenge, Kagee Moosa Cup, Knockout
Competition, and the Centenary Cup, cementing its reputation as one of the leading
clubs in Western Province rugby.
Today, Rangers RFC remains a proud community club, committed to developing rugby
talent, promoting sportsmanship, and preserving the values and heritage established
by its founders more than six decades ago.
