Background

Perseverance Rugby Football Club (often called Perseverance RFC or "Persies") is a historic and highly resilient cornerstone of South African rugby heritage. Founded in 1889 in the Cape Town suburb of Mowbray, the club carries a deeply rooted legacy tied closely to the history of grassroots and community rugby in the Western Cape.

## 🏛️ Key Historical Milestones

* 1889 (Founding): The club was formed out of the consolidation of a local Mowbray side known as the First Team Pioneers. Its initial administrative and strategy meetings were held at Brandts Hotel on Main Road, Mowbray.

* 1898 (Union Affiliation): Perseverance RFC played a vital role as a founding member of the City and Suburban Rugby Union. Because the early union lacked a dedicated home ground, teams travelled and played across fields spanning from Green Point Common to Rondebosch.

* Social and Cultural Context: During the segregation and apartheid eras, Perseverance stood out as a prominent Christian "coloured" community club. They played fixtures in a highly competitive Cape landscape alongside historic clubs like Wanderers and Progress, establishing a proud sporting identity outside the whites-only structures.

* Centenary & Beyond: The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in September 1939 at the Mowbray Town Hall and crossed its landmark 130th anniversary with a major celebration.

## 🏉 Modern Standing & Administration

* League Play: Today, Perseverance RFC remains an active, competing club under the grander umbrella of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) leagues.

* Home Base: Club events, banquets, and major prize-givings are routinely hosted at the recreation hall of the City Park sports ground in Athlone, a venue deeply symbolic of traditional community rugby in Cape Town.

* Leadership:

* The club has maintained administrative stability under dedicated community leaders, including longtime chairperson Vincent Eksteen, President Cecil Lategan, Secretary Trevor Mitchell, Head Coach Jeff Petersen, Treasurer Mike du Plooy, M&R Secretary Riedewaan Davids and Exco Member Derick Hesqua and Trustee, the late Floria Koper.
