Achievements

From 1995 to 1999, the unified Kuils River Rugby Football Club competed in the lower leagues of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, and in 1999 the Club earned promotion to the Premier B League and continued to progress each season thereafter, ultimately securing promotion to the Super A League.
During what can be described as the golden years of Kuils River rugby, the Club won the Super B League trophy in 2002 and began competing in the Super A League in 2003. This followed an extraordinary run in which the team went unbeaten for five consecutive seasons, with their only blemish being a 13–13 draw against Primrose during that period. A further highlight was a memorable 32 - 28 victory over the formidable Maties first team at a jam-packed Jagtershof Sports Field, with a crowd of more than 10,000 spectators in attendance.

Other notable achievements include Alta Bosman being recognised as Best Administrator by the Western Province Rugby Football Union in 2002, and numerous Club players earning selection to Western Province representative teams. Franklyn Frans served as WP Disa Captain in 2002, while Johan Droskie captained the WP Zone team that competed in Graaff-Reinet.

The Club also produced a President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union in Thelo Wakefield, as well as a Stormers franchise Team Manager in Christopher “Chippie” Solomon.
After being relegated to the Super B League in 2003, the Club regained promotion to the Super A League in 2018 and has been competing in Western Province’s top club rugby league since 2019.

Background

A Success Story of Rugby Unity: The History of Kuils River Rugby Football Club
The story of Kuils River Rugby Football Club is not only a rugby story - it is a story of people, courage, and belief at a pivotal moment in South Africa’s history. For decades, rugby in Kuils River reflected the divisions of the country itself. Two clubs existed side by side: Kuils River “A”, founded in 1918 with established facilities, and Kuils River “B” (formerly Sarepta), established in 1981, rich in talent but poor in resources. Though separated by race, geography, and circumstance, both clubs shared the same love for the game and pride in their town.

In the early 1990s, long before unity became fashionable, quiet pioneers began to challenge the old order. Players, administrators, and supporters took brave first steps, believing that transformation was not only possible, but right. Conversations that began cautiously in 1992 soon grew into a shared vision: one town, one club, one future. Trust was built slowly, often against scepticism and doubt, but always with sincerity.
In November 1994 - at the dawn of South Africa’s democracy - the impossible became reality. The two clubs laid down their separate identities to form a single, united Kuils River Rugby Football Club. It was a bold act of faith, born not of convenience, but of conviction.

The years that followed were not without struggle. Yet through committed leadership, hard work, and an unbreakable spirit, the club rose through the ranks of Western Province rugby. Promotion to Super League A, famous victories over established giants like Maties, and the development of players who went on to represent Western Province became milestones of a remarkable journey. In 1999 the club also had its first juniors team, a combined Under 16/19 team that was registered to compete in the Western Province schools rugby competitions.

Along the way, there were moments of deep loss that tested the club’s resolve, but they also strengthened its bonds. Friendships were forged, communities were united, and a shared identity took root.
Today, Kuils River Rugby Football Club stands as living proof that unity, when built on honesty and courage, can achieve far more than anyone dared imagine. It is a club born of history, shaped by struggle, and driven by the enduring belief that rugby - like life - is strongest when played together. The club also strives to establish mutually beneficial partnership that contributes to community development through sport.
