Background
Kraaifontein rugby club was founded in 1947, and will celebrate its 80th birthday in 2027.
The club was initially established in the older part of Kraaifontein, at the corner of Station street and 9th Avenue, with one field, and a small clubhouse made from asbestos.
In 1983, the municipality moved the club to its current position, at the sports centre, in Sarel Van Deventer street.
The new facilities included two fields, and a small brick clubhouse, with two cloakrooms.
The club is fully committed to the local community! The club members, have done a tremendous job to improve the facilities, at own cost. Members have built a pavilion, added more cloak rooms, and enlarged the clubhouse, to include an entertainment area, committee room and a small suite, to host visiting executive members, coaches and referees.
In the earlier years, Kraaifontein used to play in the so-called Second league, with participating clubs called Junior Clubs. No promotion was allowed to the so called “First League”. The thirty, “Senior club’s”status, was entrenched. In this period, Kraaifontein won the Second League completion on numerous occasions, and also beat a number of Senior clubs, in friendly matches. Later on, the club also took part in the Lion trophy competition, which consisted of fixtures between Junior and Senior clubs, and registered some great positive results. In this period, the club also won the Bailey Cup, one of the most sought after trophies of the union.
After winning the Super League B title in 2008, the club was promoted to Super League A.
The club has at this stage delivered one Springbok, scrumhalf Dan Van Zyl, who is still proud of his Kraaifontein roots. A dedicated Kraaifontein born and bred prop, Marius (Mossie) Mostert, played Super rugby for the Cats and the Stormers. Another former Stormers prop, the late Morne van der Merwe, was also a member of the club.
The club also produced a huge number of WP Junior Club players, WP Gold Cup and WP Disas players. The most revered player of the club was the late Heinie Rall, who not only captained the 1st team for many years (he also captained the WP Junior clubs team in that period), and later became the club’s 1st team coach. The clubhouse is named after him.
Other famous names who coached at the club, include former Springbok hooker Charl Marais, international top referee Freek Burger, former great players, Pompies Williams and the late Rudolph Paulse.
