Hamlets is a community rugby club established in 1960. The club initially competed in the Malmesbury Union and Districts Rugby Board.

In 1966, Hamlets won the Silver Trophy and went on to claim the league title several times until 1978. During this period, Nicky Arends was selected for the Proteas team that toured England in 1971.

Following 1978, Hamlets left the Malmesbury Union under the Federation and joined the Tygerberg Rugby Union (SARU).

In 1992, Hamlets joined the newly formed Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU). Competing in the Zones competition among 110 clubs, the club finished 86th overall. That same year (1992), Hamlets won the Zones and earned promotion to Premier League C.

The club continued its upward momentum by winning the Premier League C title in 1993, securing promotion to Premier League B. In 1994, Hamlets were promoted to Premier League A, where they went on to win the Premier League A title in 1995. Hamlets were relegated to Premier League B in 2005. The club bounced back strongly, winning the Premier League B title in 2006.

With the restructuring of competitions into the Super League format, Hamlets were promoted to Super League B in 2012. In 2019, the club achieved promotion to Super League A. We were again relegated back to Super League B, where the club currently competes.

Hamlets has also produced several players who went on to represent Western Province, including WP Disa players and a Western Province Sevens player. One of the club’s most distinguished former players, Gavin Passens, represented several unions, won the Currie Cup five times with the Blue Bulls, and was selected for the Springboks to tour the British Isles.

Today, Hamlets continues to build for the future, fielding six junior teams and remaining a proud pillar of its community.
