Established in 1896 in Cross Street, District 6, Hamediehs RFC took its name from the Turkish ship Hamedieh Star, which docked in Cape Town in 1895. The vessel itself was named in honour of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the Caliph of Islam and ruler of the Ottoman Empire.

The club’s early identity was shaped by figures like Mogamat Tape Rinquest, its charismatic 1920s captain affectionately called "Çappy" by teammates. Alongside players such as Pangie Davids and Achmat Gool, the club thrived before going dormant in 1931 due to the hardships of the era. The club was revived by a dedicated group including Yusuf "Joey" Jakoet, Ismail Behardien, Abdullah "Toka" Francis, Ebrahim "Veta" Rinquest, and Mogamat "Kakfoot" Theinissen.

Their efforts bore fruit with victories in the prestigious Bali Cup (1956) and Kagee Moosa Trophy (1965), competing under the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) in Green Point. Throughout apartheid’s divisive policies in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, Hamediehs RFC remained resilient, staying affiliated with the WPRFU until rugby’s unification in post-1994 democratic South Africa. The club also boasts a proud legacy of producing national players, including Springbok captain Ebrahim Rinquest and Anwar Majiet, who represented South Africa before integration.

In 2016, Hamediehs RFC started a junior rugby structure encompassing age groups ranging from u7 to u19. This was a crucial initiative for the sustainability of the Club. As well as formally introducing the values of the Club being Perseverance, Honesty, Obedience, Generosity and Forgiveness.

In 2019, Hamediehs also expanded its community involvement and outreach by launching the Hamediehs Cares Foundation with its own structure which aimed to further focus on community development and outreach initiatives. Hamediehs RFC looks forward to celebrating its 130th year in 2026. More than just a rugby club, it stands as a symbol of community, perseverance, and sporting excellence.
