Background
Drakenstein Rugby Football Club—affectionately known as “The Drakies”—is a proudly rooted and socially impactful rugby club based at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility, just outside Paarl in the Western Cape, South Africa. The club was originally established in 1987 under the name Allandale RFC, and in 2024, underwent a significant transformation, officially adopting the name Drakenstein RFC to reflect its evolving identity and deeper community integration.
The club brings together a diverse group of players through its three senior teams:
The 1st team consists of members of the Department of Correctional Services and players from nearby communities.
The 2nd and 3rd teams are made up exclusively of incarcerated offenders, using rugby as a structured tool for rehabilitation, growth, and discipline.
Drakenstein RFC is proudly affiliated to the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) and forms part of the Paarl Rugby Code (PRC). The club hosts its home matches at Mandela Park, located within the correctional facility grounds. Wearing the colours green, gold, and white, The Drakies have become known for their fierce competitiveness, unity, and unwavering spirit on the field.
More than just a rugby club, Drakenstein RFC is a symbol of hope, transformation, and second chances—where sport becomes a bridge between correctional services, communities, and a brighter future.
