CPUT Rugby Club was formed in 2019 following the dissolution of the Gardens Rugby Club merger. CPUT Rugby team had to begin building its rugby brand by playing in the regions and working its way up to Super League A. The team won junior leagues before being relegated to Super League B in 2025. In its inaugural year (2019), the club won the National Varsity Sport Tournament, the Varsity Shield Tournament. Because of COVID 19, the club had to stop playing rugby for nearly two years. During that time, the CPUT rugby club continued to participate in Varsity Sport Events, and by 2021, we had defended our Varsity Shield tournament by winning it for the second time in a row, a feat known as back-to-back championship. Throughout its existence, the CPUT rugby club has performed well and is once again developing its rugby brand. It is well-known in club rugby and among higher education institutions around the country.
