Background

Established in 1934 in District Six, Caledonian Roses Rugby Football Club – affectionately known as Callies – is one of Cape Town’s most resilient and historically significant community rugby institutions. The club quickly became a pillar of organised rugby within the coloured community.
Between 1934 and 1938, Callies played a crucial role in safeguarding the future of the Western Province Coloured Rugby Board by providing the minimum number of teams required to prevent deregistration and retain its playing grounds. This early contribution cemented the club’s reputation as both a sporting and administrative leader.

Beyond the field, Caledonian Roses demonstrated a strong social conscience. In 1936, the club partnered with Young Stars RFC to establish the Charity Rag Board, an initiative that raised funds for hospitals and charitable causes. During this period, the club adopted the maroon jerseys of the University of Stellenbosch (Maties), which became its iconic playing colours.

Deeply rooted in District Six, the club’s original headquarters were based there, with many early players emerging from the Raghmaniyeh Institute. The name Caledonian Roses was proposed by Salie Samsodien, inspired by a team his father had represented in the 1890s.

Despite the upheaval of the apartheid era and the forced removals that displaced the District Six community, Caledonian Roses endured and relocated, carrying its heritage forward. Today, based at Noll Avenue in Athlone industrial area, the club continues to compete proudly in Western Province Rugby. In 2025, Callies celebrated its 90th anniversary by achieving promotion to the WP Super League C — a fitting milestone in a legacy defined by resilience, excellence, and community pride.
