Background

Rugby started in Bellville South in 1944, when the Bellville Board was formed. Clubs included Athenians, Young Osbournes, Lion Hearts, Good Hopes, Belvenians, etc, with the segregation of rugby due to the Apartheid laws, new unions/boards were formed in 1973.

One club, Bellville RFC was formed and participated in the non-racial SARU, affiliated to SACOS. Another club, Bellville South RFC was affiliated with the SARB. Both clubs were leading clubs in their respective unions. Bellville RFC was the Top 8 champions for 3 years, while the Bellville South RFC was the sport Pienaar club champions.

In 1992 negotiations started to form a uniform SARU incorporating the old SARU + SARB clubs. The two clubs in Bellville South had their first exploratory meeting in 1992 in the Belmonte Lounge. Bellville RFC was represented by Eugene Arendse, Charles De Leeuw, Frikkie van Wyk and Ian Fortuin. Bellville South RFC was represented by KMDT John Cupido, Charles Davids, Tom Jarvis and Pat Lombard.

The MOU was drawn up to form one unified club in the new WPRFU and new SARFU. During these continued discussions there was an order from SARU to stop all negotiations, but the two clubs agreed to continue to unify Bellville South. But when the discussions continued between SARU and SARB, the two clubs in Bellville South were already in the advanced stages of unification. Thus the new club Bellville RFU was then formed in 1992 to participate in the new WPRFU leagues. This club was then also the first disadvantaged club to participate in the newly formed WPRFU super league.

In 2000, CPUT Rugby Club amalgamated with the Bellville RFC because their rugby at tertiary institutions were dying. The club was the called Bellville Tech RFC. Many of these students then had an opportunity to showcase their talents, wherein many were selected for the SA student team for example Denzil Frans, Robert Seconds, Donny van Wyk and Rito Hlungwani.

In 2008, when the new varsity Cup started, CPUT then started to revert back to campus. The club then also reverted back to Bellville RFC. Bellville RFC also provided many players for the WP Representative teams as well as SA schools, SA u/19 and the Springboks. SA schools included Johannes “Bolla” Conradie, Shaun Fortuin and Jacques Booysen. While Stormers players included Johannes Conradie, Quinton Davids, David Hendricks, Rito Hlunwane. Springboks included Johannes Conradie and Quiton Davids. Bellville RFC
continues to compete in the top leagues of WPRFU.
